Modern Virus-Destroying Equipment Donated to Lithuanian Oncology Hospitals

Lithuania’s oncology hospitals will soon receive 54 bactericidal UV cleaner-recirculators, which were purchased with the money raised during the virtual Blossom of Hope charity auction, organized by the International Women’s Association of Vilnius (IWAV). The bactericidal UV recirculators are new-generation indoor air purification and disinfection devices, which kill viruses, bacteria and yeast. This type of indoor air purifier will be used for the first time in most Lithuanian hospitals.

The first batch of modern equipment was handed over to the National Cancer Institute today by Lidija Rasutis, the chair of the organizing committee of Blossom of Hope 2020 with her team and the Honorary Patron of the project, the First Lady of Lithuania Mrs. Diana Nausėdienė.

“Today, the need for bactericidal UV recirculators in medical institutions is huge and their purchase is very significant. Modern recirculators can be used in chemotherapy treatment rooms or waiting rooms, where additional air purification and disinfection is extremely important,” says Dr. Sonata Jarmalaitė, deputy director of the National Cancer Institute.

Fifty-four bactericidal UV cleaner-recirculators were purchased with the over 33 thousand euros raised during the annual Blooming Hope charity event organized by IWAV. Traditionally, the funds raised during the charity gala are allocated to the needs of patients with oncological diseases, and the main focus is on improving the diagnostics of breast cancer in Lithuania.

According to Lidija Rasutis, this year, when deciding how to use the funds to be collected during the virtual auction, the risk of infections and viruses to oncology patients was taken into account. Therefore, after assessing the current need in the light of pandemic, it was decided to allocate the funds raised in a very targeted way – to purchase indoor equipment that helps clean the air of harmful viruses for oncology hospitals.

"We are extremely pleased with the results of this year and the opportunity to achieve the set goals. We quickly adapted to the challenges of quarantine and were not afraid of innovative solutions in organizing this virtual event. There is no quarantine for good work,” says Jurgita Butkevičienė, 2018-2020 chairwoman of the board of the International Women's Association of Vilnius.

The International Women's Association of Vilnius has organized the Blooming Hope charity event for 12 years in a row. However, this year, instead of a gala evening, Blossom of Hope 2020 was transformed into a virtual event. The project sponsors and partners included Roche Lietuva, Eversheds Saladžius, BaltichesHaus, Mototoja, and the artists' initiative Art Without a Crown, as well as people who donated money during the live and silent auctions online. A total of 33,388.17 EUR was raised, enabling the organizers to purchase 54 bactericidal UV recirculators. They will be distributed to oncology hospitals in Lithuania in the near future.

Over the course of 12 years, this charitable initiative has raised over 260,000 EUR to purchase and distribute free medical supplies for cancer diagnostics to Lithuanian oncology hospitals. The International Women's Association of Vilnius is a non-governmental and non-profit association, which serves as a forum for socializing, networking, and charitable giving. It unites international women from more than 25 countries living in Lithuania to help disadvantaged groups in Lithuania. The association is solely run by volunteers. IWAV works toward sustainable empowerment through a variety of activities designed to contribute to the personal growth of its members as well as to the improved living conditions of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups located within the communities they call home.

The SILENT and LIVE AUCTIONS have finished. In case you have missed it, LIVE stream recording will be available for watching until May 4th, Monday 11 PM Lithuanian time (GMT+2)

We will honor the challenge posed by the theme of Enlightenment by using technology and creativity to raise funds in our current reality, which requires that we respect measures to reduce the spread of the virus for the health of everyone. Get ready to bid on luxury prizes at our exciting online event!

🎗️️ Date: Saturday, 2 May 2020, 19:00
🎗️ ️Place: The comfort of your own home
🎗️ Honorary Patron: First Lady of Lithuania Diana Nausėdienė
🎗️ Goodwill Ambassador: Dr. Sonata Jarmalaite, deputy director of the National Cancer Institute of Lithuania
🎗️ Cause: UV Cleaner-Recirculators for cancer hosptials

Our innovative goal to provide breast tissue markers to cancer patients in Lithuania has now changed due to the  unstable world around us.  The five hospitals that we serve (one in Vilnius, one in Kaunas, two in Klaipėda, and one in Šiauliai) have brought forward new information about what is necessary considering the present medical situation involving cancer patients faced with the coronavirus pandemic.  The need to sustain a sterile environment for those already hospitalized or waiting to undergo treatment is immense and the doctors have asked for UV CLEANER-RECIRCULATORS (individual free-standing devices that are ideal for disinfection in hospitals and help clean the air of harmful viruses) in lieu of breast tissue markers. We will be providing these devices, which benefit all patients who are undergoing hospital treatment for cancer and can be used for many years to come. We are grateful to be able to meet this immediate need given the current Covid-19 crisis while fulfilling our original goal: to assist breast cancer patients in Lithuania.

While we cannot hold a gala even this year, we can still make a difference.  Let us help our fellow women in need!

Projekto „Blossom of Hope“ virtualus labdaros renginys vyks 2020 metų gegužės 2 dieną 19 val. SAPERE AUDE. DARE TO KNOW.

Blossom of Hope's Cause: Breast Tissue Markers and Other Medical Supplies

What are Breast Tissue Markers?
Breast tissue markers provide critical help to women during the treatment of breast cancer. When a biopsy is performed, a marker may be inserted if the area of concern is small and could possibly be fully removed during the biopsy. The marker will then be visible if further imaging or procedures are required in the future. Sometimes a biopsy is performed with an ultrasound and a marker is inserted. A mammogram is then performed to check if the abnormality visible on the ultrasound can be seen with a mammogram. When a marker clip is seen on subsequent mammograms, it shows the radiologist where a biopsy has been previously performed and prevents repeated biopsies of the same abnormality. Some patients have chemotherapy before surgery, and a marker is placed at the cancer site. Should the cancer shrink considerably with chemotherapy, the marker will enable doctors to identify where it was with further imaging when the time comes to remove the necessary tissue surgically.

Hopefully, breast tissue markers will soon be compensated by the state!

There are different types of markers available. Radiologists use the marker clip most suitable for the patient’s particular requirements. The price of a marker may differ depending on its type and the materials used to make it.

Providing Breast Tissue Markers to Hospitals
In 2009, IWAV members became aware of the comparatively high rate of Lithuanian women whose breast cancer was not diagnosed until it was in the later stages of growth. The association took action by partnering with Roche Lietuva to provide medical supplies for cancer diagnostics through an annual fundraiser with a charitable auction and dinner gala.

Over the course of 11 years, the project has raised over 230,000 euros to purchase and distribute free biopsy needles, localization wires, and breast tissue markers to help Lithuanian women in the fight against breast cancer. Those medical supplies were either not fully compensated or not paid for by the national health system at all. Therefore, not all breast cancer patients in need had free access to these supplies through their hospitals. By 2019, biopsy needles became more readily available in Lithuania and are now compensated by the state. Therefore, after consultation with the hospitals during handovers and a special meeting arranged with the National Cancer Institute open to all IWAV members, a need for breast tissue markers was identified. The Blossom of Hope project began to raise funds in 2019 to purchase and distribute free breast tissue markers, providing effective and innovative treatment and critical help to Lithuanian women during the treatment for breast cancer.

Please note that due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, hospitals have requested  UV CLEANER-RECIRCULATORS (individual free-standing devices that are ideal for disinfection in hospitals and help clean the air of harmful viruses) in lieu of breast tissue markers in order to sustain a sterile environment for patients undergoing treatment. Funds raised for Blossom of Hope 2020 will go to purchasing these devices to help protect women during the threat of coronavirus and for years to come.
